Event: 2-Day Retreat: Beyond Carl Rogers: Towards a Psychotherapy for the 21st Century.

Facilitator: Dr. David Brazier, psychotherapist, author of many books and writings, is an authority on Buddhist psychology, a former associate of Carl Rogers, trained in a range of psychotherapeutic methods including psychodrama. He is also president of the International Zen Therapy Institute and head of a Buddhist community.

Event Description: A workshop on counselling and psychotherapy skills and principles. At the end of the last century I edited a book called “Beyond Carl Rogers: Toward a psychotherapy for the 21st century”. I had been closely involved with the great American psychologist and his invaluable ideas and work. I have been a constructive critic. Rogers established humane qualities at the core of psychotherapy. He was in favour of research, but he was not in favour of reducing therapy to a set of techniques and protocols. Since he died, many of his ideas have resurfaced within the Existential Therapy movement. My own development has also taken on a substantial influence from Buddhist psychology of which I have made a lifelong study. In this present workshop we can practise together and I will share where I have got to so far with such questions as core conditions, active intervention, therapy as a spiritual path, transference and counter-transference, other-centredness, and the use of action methods. Psychotherapy and counselling are better seen as forms of accompaniment through the vicissitudes of life than as treatment methods for pathological syndromes. The medical model has some meaning, but it is not an adequate description of what therapy can and should be. If we share Rogers’ faith in human potential then it behoves us to go on developing beyond where he left off.

Dr. David Brazier, president of the International Zen Therapy Institute, Dharmavidya of the Amida Order of Pureland Buddhism. Zen master, psychotherapist and author. His published work includes ten books, among them, Zen Therapy, Love and Its Disappointment, Beyond Carl Rogers, and Who Loves Dies Well. He is the lead teacher on professional training programmes in Korea, Spain and South America and travels and lectures extensively. He has studied Buddhism for fifty years including periods with Thich Nhat Hanh (Vietnamese), Kennett Roshi (Soto Zen), Saiko Sensei (Shinshu), Chogyam Trungpa (Kargyu) and other leading teachers. He has founded and worked on many social aid projects and gives spiritual direction in various communities but has become known primarily for his work on Buddhist psychology. Between lecture tours he lives at a hermitage in a rural area of central France.
